Brussels2030 Summer Assembly 2023

Field trips & walks, Thursday 29-06

🕑 14.00 – 17.00

Toekomstwijken in Brussel – Noordwijk

🚩 Brussels North station (departure)
Hosts: Brukselbinnenstebuiten

Goods and passenger rail transport determined the development of the Northern Quarter from 1835 onwards. Along ‘de Kassei’ (Antwerpsesteenweg), a lively, mixed neighbourhood with houses, factories, cinemas and cafés arose. These had to make way for the progressive thinking of the Golden Sixties and the office towers of the Manhattan Plan. Is the Northern Quarter even a neighbourhood? There is no centre and the public space is inhospitable. And what exactly will replace the WTC towers, now in scaffoldings? And what about Masui? This neighbourhood remained relatively untouched, but its soul had largely faded from the neighbourhood until new residents moved in. An original Gaucheret Park, organisations for young people and the underprivileged, unusual new buildings with social housing and a neighbourhood contract are gradually bringing hope and new life to the old streets. A park on the old bed of the Zenne is the backbone for the whole district. This walk takes you along the contrasts of the past and future of the Northern Quarter. Because neighbourhood renewal, urban agriculture, green and blue ribbons for more biodiversity and energy districts are also emerging here.

Doubt your eyes: unearthing botanical pasts and futures along the Senne North

🚩 tram-stop Mabru (departure – to be confirmed)

During the Brussels 2030 Summer Assembly, SUPER TERRAM invites you to explore the complex interplays between soils, plants, railway infrastructures, and the past and future river landscape in the North of Brussels. To guide us in our journey, we count on Teresa-Galí Izard, an experienced landscape designer with international botanical expertise. Together, we will connect to the soils, the seeds, and stories they carry, and try to reconstruct the ways in which infrastructural entanglements shape and are shaped by more-than-human life on the site.
